Kyriaki-Evangelia Aslani

PhD Candidate

Kyriaki-Evangelia Aslani has graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Technological Educational Institute of Thessaly (now University of Thessaly) in September, 2019. Her bachelor thesis was «Study of the effect of the magnetic Reynolds number on canonical magnetohydrodynamic flows» under the supervisor of Dr. Christos Dritselis. She is also a scientific associate in the Laboratory for Manufacturing Processes and Machine Tools at University of Thessaly, under the supervision of Prof. John Kechagias. At April 2019, she gained an undergraduate scholarship from National Scholarships Foundation, Greece. Her computational and programming skills are FORTRAN, C, Matlab, Mathematics, AutoCAD 2D, Invertor, Solidworks, OpenFoam and ANSYS.

Dr Lefteris Benos

Research Associate

Lefteris Benos is a Postdoctoral Researcher in iBO/CERTH. He has a B.Sc. in Physics as well as a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. From 2010 to 2018 he was a member of the “National program of controlled thermonuclear fusion”. He has expertise in CFD modelling of free surface MHD flows and Heat Transfer of liquid metals for fusion applications and a strong background on Fluid Mechanics, Wetting Phenomena, Plasma Physics and Finite Element Analysis. At the moment, he is interested in the field of Biomechanics and Bioengineering with emphasis on developing advanced personalized, multi-scale computer models preventing osteoarthritis. Finally, he is an author of more than 20 scientific publications in international journals and conference proceedings.

Doulkeridis Stavros

Research Associate

Doulkeridis Stavros holds a diploma in Electrical Engineering (2021) from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, of the University of West Attica (Greece). His thesis project was “Electrical field imaging techniques in arterial aneurysms/narrowing by magnetohydrodynamic methods” under the supervisor of Prof. IE Sarris. His research focuses on the (hemo) hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics. Today is a postgraduate student, in the «MSc by Research in Thermofluids», at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, of University of West Attica. He is familiar with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) softwares such as FEniCS Project, OpenFoam, ANSYS platform and multiple grid generators. His computational and programming skills are C, Python, Linux environment, HPC systems, Matlab and CAD designers.

Dr Apostolos Gkountas

Adjunct Lecturer

Apostolos Gkountas holds a Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering and a MSc on energy systems from University of Thessaly in Volos. He continued his doctorate studies in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and presented his thesis at University of Thessaly in May 2019. In 2018, he participated as a researcher in S-CO2 Project at UTC Rolls-Royce of Cranfield University in UK. His PhD was supported by Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). His research interests include numerical heat transfer, thermodynamics of real gases, centrifugal compressor aerodynamics and gas-turbine performance.
 

Dr Kostas Karamanos

Kostas Karamanos is currently a Post-Doctoral member of the TEI of Athens. His first diploma was in Physics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He received a MSc degree in Physical Chemistry from the Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan (ENS Cachan, France), an MSc degree in Mathematical Physics from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and his PhD degree in Mathematical Physics from the ULB in September 2002. He has been a NATO Fellow, a ULB Fellow, a Petsalys-Lepage Foundation Fellow, a NRCPS Demokritos Fellow, a «Pythagoras» main Fellow and an IKY Fellow. On September 1999 he received the Van Buuren Foundation Scientific Prize (ULB), and on April 2003, he received the Camille Liegeois Travel Grant from the Royal Academy of Sciences, Belgium. On September 2013 his name has been included in «Who’s Who» in the World. His research includes Laplacian Transfer, Fractals, Systems theory, Chaos and Ecosystems. He is actually member of the Editorial board of four reviews: (ASSA: Advances in Systems Science and Applications), (Scientific Inquiry, USA), (ISRN Applied Mathematics) and (SRE: Scientific Research and Essays).
In the context of an active collaboration with I.E. Sarris, our collaboration includes Wind Farms, Biological flows and Open Systems.
  Dr Evangelos Karvelas

 Karvelas Evangelos has graduated as a mechanical engineer from the Energy Technology Department of Technological Institute of Athens in 2009. He has obtained  a Master diploma from school of engineering, Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom in 2012 and obtained a PhD in Engineering form University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece in 2019. His thesis project was «A three Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis(CFD) of an Anode Direct Methanol Fuel Cell» under the supervision of Prof. Ioannis Sarris. From 2013 till now he has participated in NanoTher program as a researcher in order to develop a computational method, which will navigate nanoparticles inside the human blood vessels. He is familiar with open source( CFD ) software (OpenFOAM), Ansys platform as well as multiple grid generators. His computational skills are  Fortran, C++, Matlab and Visual Basic.
 

Dr Nikolaos Lampropoulos

Research Associate

Dr. N. Lampropoulos is Mechanical Engineer PhD graduated from the National Technical University of Athens. His thesis at the Laboratory of Thermal Turbo-machines of the Fluid Section (2000-2005) focused on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis,  multigrid techniques on unstructured grids, parallel programming through PVM. In terms of fluid flows, his points of interest are High Reynolds transonic flows (which are handled by making use of especially stretched grids in the vicinity of the wall) as well as low Reynolds laminar flows which were investigated during his diploma thesis. He is familiar with the open source CFD software package (OpenFoam) as well as the Free Software Three-Dimensional Structural Finite Element Program (Calculix). Lately, he focuses on the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Guided Drug Delivery System of  Magnetic Nanoparticles aiming at fighting tumors and atherosclerosis.
His computational skills are the Fortran and  C++ languages, the linux operating system and the Networked Parallel Computing through PVM. He has been working since 2007 as part time lecturer in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration by the Technical Educational Institute of Athens as well as manager of the electromechanical maintenance of Attiki Odos (Metropolitan ringroad of Athens, Greece). He speaks fluently Engish and German.
  Dr Christos Liosis

Research Associate

Liosis  Christos  has  graduated  as  a  physicist  from  the  Physics  Department  of University  of  Ioannina  in  2014.  He  received  a  MSc  degree  from  the School  of Pedagogical and Technological Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics  in  Education  (2015-2016).An  PBD  from  Universities  of  Ioannina, Crete  and  Patras in  material  science  for  advanced  technologies(2015). Also  has obtained a MSc degree from the school of engineering, Heriot-Watt University and   Technical   Institution   of   Athens   (2014-2016).   His   thesis   project is «Numerical study of nanoparticle mixing in micropipes» under the supervision of Prof.  Ioannis  Sarris. He  is  familiar  with  open  source  software  Fenics  and  his computational and programming skills are Matlab, Mathematica and Python.
Ms Despoina Manou

Research Associate

Despoina Manou is a dedicated mathematician who holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Aegean (2015-2020) and a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics and Neuroinformatics from the Open Hellenic University-Ionian University (2020-2022). Proficient in English and her native Greek, with a beginner’s level in Spanish. Her academic journey includes notable research activities such as a thesis on Factorization in Euclidean Domains, participation in the 14th Pan-Hellenic Geometry Seminar, and projects on Managing Project Risks and Changes (University of California, Irvine) and Statistical Migration Models using R (University of Ioannina). She has also delved into applied areas like Python programming and the forecasting of depression using EEG and ECG. Engaged in postgraduate research, Despoina holds a focus on the analysis of voice signals for diagnosing Parkinson’s Disease.
Dr. Ilias  Panagiotopoulos

Associate Professor at Hellenic Army Academy

Dr. Eng. Ilias Ef. Panagiotopoulos was born in Patras, Greece, in 1980. He received the bachelor’s (2002) and first Ph.D. (2009) degrees in mechanical and aeronautics engineering from the Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics Department, University of Patras, Greece, and the second Ph.D. (2020) degree in informatics science and technology from the Department of Informatics and Telematics, Harokopio University of Athens, Greece. Since 2024 he is working as an Associate Professor at Hellenic Army Academy in the field of Computational Exterior Ballistics.
He has many years of academic experience by working as an Adjunct Professor in Higher Education Organizations. Moreover, he has already accumulated extended experience by participating in large-scale research EU-funded projects and collaborating with wide international scientific teams. His primary research interests include the scientific areas of Computational Exterior Ballistics, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Aerospace Technology, Flight Mechanics, Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, while other fields include Intelligent Transportation Systems and Vehicle Automation Technology.
He has published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, in conference proceedings and presented his research achievements in several conferences and workshops. He is a reviewer in several scientific journals and conferences.
  Athina Papadopoulou

Research Associate

Athina Papadopoulou has graduated as a chemist from the Chemistry Department of University of Ioannina in 2017. Her thesis project was «Synthesis, characterization and study of electrocatalytic behavior of doped graphene with eterogeneous »under the supervisor of Prof. Mamantos Prodromidis. She is familiar with Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). Her computational and programming skills are Python and GPES.
Chariton Pavlidis

Research Associate

 

Chariton L. Pavlidis holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering (2021) from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering Educators and Mechanical Engineers, School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (Greece). He is currently contributing on the elaboration of computational and experimental researches and on the development of the experimental equipment in the Laboratory of Thermofluids, University of West Attica (Greece). His research focuses on the urban and spatial planning, through the simulation of atmospheric flows and on the dispersion of hazardous materials in the atmospheric boundary layer. He uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and dispersion models in his research, with a great respect in the urban microclimate modelling.
  Dr Sophia Peppa

Ass. Professor

Sophia Peppa graduated from the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens in 1996. She holds a Master of Science degree inNaval Technology (2001) from the National Technical University of Athens and in Quality Assurance (2005) from the Hellenic Open University. She obtained her doctorate in Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2012. She joined the Department of Naval Architecture in the Technological Educational Institute of Athens in March 2011 as a Lecturer. She is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece since 1996.
Dr Peppa’s research interests include the areas of fluid mechanics and Computational Fluid Dynamics, Flow-Induced Vibrations, experimental hydrodynamics and the design of high speed crafts. Her current research activities focus on the development and application of computational techniques and code implementation using computer clusters and computational grids for the solution of problems in fluid mechanics. The main applications for this include fluid-structure interaction problems that arise in a range of engineering devices, such as deep-sea risers and heat exchangers. She has participated in several research projects funded by the EU and the Greek Government and has published several research articles and technical reports.
Her additional experience includes working as a technical superintendent for the shipping industry and as a quality assurance manager for the Laboratory for Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics of National Technical University of Athens.
Dr Panagiota Pimenidou

Research Associate

Dr Panagiota Pimenidou is a chemical engineer (MEng in Chemical Engineering, University of Leeds, UK, PhD (School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering), University of Leeds, UK). Her research focus is on heterogeneous catalytic systems (autothermality with simultaneous hydrogen production and CO2 capture) and novel nanocatalysis of biofuels combustion), advanced oxidation processes, reduction of emissions (including kinetic studies and CO2 capture), biofuels utilisation (plus kinetic studies). She is now a visiting researcher at the University of Patras and was a tenured Assistant Professor in Hydrogen Safety (Ulster University, UK) and tenured Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering (Programme leader of BEng/ MEng in Chemical Engineering, University of Bradford, UK).   Research interests: • Surface reactions (oxygen transfer materials, adsorption) • Thermal and photocatalytic reaction systems • Heterogeneous catalysis (hydrogen production)    And photo attached.
Dr. Nickolas D. Polychronopoulos

 holds a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science (U. Patras) and a Master’s and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (U. Thessaly). His field of expertise lies in flow modeling in materials processing. He has publications in particle and filament coalescence for 3D printing technologies such as selective laser sintering – SLS and material extrusion additive manufacturing – MatEx), calendering of polymers, fiber orientation in injection molding, pultrusion, liquid infiltration in elastic porous media, viscoelastic effects in film casting, natural fiber composites, rheology and technology of polymer extrusion, and nanofluids. He has recently carried out post–doctoral research in The Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). He has been an Adjunct Lecturer in U. Thessaly. He has been working for 12 years for Polydynamics Inc (Ontario, Canada) first as Process Simulation Specialist and recently as R&D Engineer. He has also worked for one year for Rontis Hellas (Larissa, Greece) as R&D/Production Engineer on endovascular balloon catheters with multi-lumen shafts.
  Stamatina Samioti

Stamatina Samioti has graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from the Piraeus University of Applied Sciences in 2013. She has obtained a Master diploma in Biomedical Engineering from University of Strathclyde. She has published her bachelor thesis, “Biomaterials, Trends and Prospects in the Support of Sports Activities”, in 22ndInternational Congress of Physical Education & Sport. Her master thesis was “Latest Understanding on the Adverse Effects of Metallic Wear Debris Generated from Orthopaedic Implants”. She has participated in Creating Innovative Sustainability Pathways (CRISP) program. Her computational skills are Matlab, FeBio, C++, Python, Inventor and Solidworks.
Dr Ioannis Sarris

Ioannis E. Sarris holds a diploma in mechanical engineering (1995) from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Patras (Greece) and a PhD in Engineering (2001) from the Dept. of Mechanical (and Industrial) Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Thessaly (Greece). He elected as a Professor of Fluids Mechanics and Magnetohydrodtynamics at the Mechanical Engineering Department of University of West Attica at 2020.
He was a visiting lecturer at the Departments of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at University of Thessaly (UTh) tutoring numerous undergraduate courses and the postgraduate lesson of “Computational Fluid Mechanics”. He received a Marie-Curie postdoctoral fellowship at Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. He has selected for the postdoctoral fellowship of the Greek Fellowships Foundation, he received the postdoctoral fellowship PYTHAGORAS from the Greek Minister of Education and Religion and the fellowship of the Research Committee of UTh during his doctoral studies. He is a researcher worked in various research projects and his research interests include the scientific areas of fluid mechanics and transport phenomena, magnetohydrodynamics of liquid metals and plasmas, fuel cells, natural convection, turbulent flow simulation using DNS and LES techniques and the study of industrial and environmental flows.
He has published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, in conference proceedings and presented his research achievements in several conferences and workshops. He is a reviewer in several scientific journals and conferences .
Dr George Sofiadis

Adjunct Lecturer

George Sofiadis holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering (2014) from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Thessaly (Greece). He has been awarded a bursary to Cranfield University MSc Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in 2016/17. He has succesfully completed the MSc in September of 2017. His MSc Thesis has been conducted in close collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which concerned the external aerodynamics study of a 3D production car. He is familiar with open source software OpenFoam, ANSYS platform and multiple grid generators. His computational and programming skills are Fortran, Linux environment, HPC systems, Matlab and CAD designers.
 Nikos Sterpis

PhD Candidate

Nikos I. Sterpis graduated from the Physics Department of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (B. Sc.) in 1988. He received a Master’s Degree (M.Ed.) from the School of Humanities of the Hellenic Open University in 2008. He also obtained a Degree in Energy Technology Engineering from the Technological Educational Institution of Athens in 2015. He has been working as an appointed teacher in Secondary Education since 2002 and he has been the Head Teacher of the Evening High School of Elefsina since 2001.
Mr. Panagiotis Tzekos Panagiotis K. Tzekos holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering (2021) from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of West Attica (Greece). He is currently contributing on the elaboration of computational and experimental researches and on the development of the experimental equipment in the Laboratory of Thermo-Fluid Systems (LTFS), University of West Attica (Greece). His research focuses on urban accidents through the simulation of the dispersion of hazardous materials from large pool fires in the atmospheric boundary layer. He is familiar with open source CFD software OpenFOAM and FDS. His computational and programming skills are Matlab, Python and Ubuntu environment.
Dr Konstantinos Vassilopoulos

Vasilopoulos Konstantinos holds a PhD from the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing from Cranfield University, U.K., a DEA degree (MSc) in Thermal and Energy Systems (2002) from the University Paris XII Créteil, Paris, an MSc in Numerical Media Engineering (2003) from the Ecole Supérieure d’Ingénieurs en Electronique et Electrotechnique  – Group ESIEE, Paris and a a BA in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Thessaly (2001), Greece. His research focuses on the dispersion of hazardous materials in the urban environment. He has worked as an engineer for the calculations of Highway Tunnel ventilation. He is an associate engineer on modelling environmental, safety projects and building dynamic simulations at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He teaches Industrial Measurements and Flow Aerodynamics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of West Attica, Athens. He uses computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and dispersion models in his research.
